Cultivating Love for the Quran in Early Childhood

Written by Dr. Aisha Siddiqua • 5 min read • Islamic Parenting Series

As Muslim parents, one of our greatest aspirations is to see our children develop a genuine, heartfelt attachment to the Book of Allah. Yet too often, the initial experience of Quran learning can become associated with pressure, rigid correction, or tension during busy evening routines.

The Prophetic methodology of education is centered upon Targheeb (encouragement and instilling love) before demanding perfection. When children feel that their Quran time is safe, positive, and accompanied by loving parental presence, their retention and enthusiasm grow naturally.

"Teach and make things easy, and do not make things difficult; give glad tidings and do not push people away." (Musnad Ahmad)

1. Consistency Over Duration

A common mistake is attempting long 45-minute daily sessions with a 6-year-old child. At this developmental stage, high-quality focus lasts approximately 10 to 15 minutes. A cheerful 10-minute session every single day will build far deeper memorization and positive sentiment than an exhaustive hour once a week.

2. Connect the Verses to Stories & Meaning

Children are natural storytellers. When introducing Surahs like Al-Fil (The Elephant) or Al-Quraysh, take five minutes to describe the narrative context. When they visualize the birds protecting the Ka’bah or understand Allah’s care for hungry travelers, the words cease to be abstract sounds and become vibrant living memories.

3. Celebrate Sincere Effort, Not Just Flawless Output

In our classes at IlmNex, teachers prioritize praising the child’s perseverance and sincere effort over perfection. If a child spends two days mastering a tricky letter like Dhad (ض), celebrating their patience fosters an enduring growth mindset grounded in faith.
